Awesome Acoustic & Electric Guitars for Kids!
Kids Acoustic Guitars
A kids acoustic guitar is a great choice for a budding musician. These are real guitars that will allow your child to learn to play a guitar. Childrens acoustic guitars are fun and educational for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students. Many guitars for kids come as a kit or a package which includes the guitar, a case (or gig bag) and several other items. Guitar picks, extra strings and sometimes a capo or tuner are included in the kids’ acoustic guitar package. Almost all come with some type of instructional material. There may be a DVD, CD, books or tapes included with the guitar.
A kids acoustic guitar is sized just right for a child’s tiny hands and short arms. They are a downsized version of a standard guitar. You’ll find there are a couple of different sizes of children’s acoustic guitars that are designed to accommodate the varying sizes of children as they grow. ½ size guitars and ¾ size guitars are terms used to describe the size of the child’s acoustic guitar in comparison to a standard size guitar. Some manufactures choose to describe the guitars in inches such as a 25″ guitar. If you are in doubt as to the best size for your child, it is advisable for you to seek the advice of a school music teacher or another musician. Buying a guitar that is too large for your child can lead to a frustrating experience for them, so do be sure to get the correct size.
Many styles and colors to choose from!
In addition to guitar size, choosing a guitar that is visually appealing to your child will help motivate him/her to practice. You’ll find that there are many colors/finishes and different woods to choose from. Some have natural looking wood bodies while others are quite flamboyant. You will also have a choice as to whether you want a nylon string guitar or steel string guitar. Steel strings are harder on the fingers until callouses are built up on the tips of your child’s fingers, but although nylon strings might be a tad easier to hold down at first, nylon strings are typically associated with finger picking style of guitar playing. That is entirely different than playing with a single pick. So, this too is something to consider when shopping.
Caring for your guitar
Teaching your child to care for their guitar is very important to preserve the guitars beauty as well as the guitar’s sound quality.
- Protect your guitar by storing it in it’s case when it’s not in use. This will keep your guitar from accidentally being scratched or dinged.
- Never expose your guitar to excessive heat or cold, humidity, and direct sunlight for prolonged period of time. Exposing the guitar to these elements may make the wood dry, brittle, warped, or cracked. A guitar needs to be kept in a moderately cool, dry environment.
- Clean and polish the guitar with lemon oil or a good furniture polish with a soft cloth to enhance the finish and restore natural moisture loss.
- Regularly check and tighten screws or any loose parts.
- Every 3-4 months change the guitar strings to keep your instrument sounding it’s best.
